Some of the classes I enrolled this semester were closed without explanation and many of the classes were for students who were about to graduate, that means that are the last classes they are supposed to take in order to graduate. If they are not available that could have future repercussions because most of the classes are pre-requisites for the next ones. I have had many problems here at the campus in order to take my classes consecutively and that is one of the reasons I have had not graduated yet, so I can understand first hand the frustration of trying to continue your college education and the system continuously getting you stuck. That also implies many other kind of problems including financial

The movie Broche de Oro, a local production filmed entirely here on the island is a very new and refreshing proposal to all audiences. The main characters are three men in their golden years near their 70's who live in a nursing home and the grandson of one of them Carlos. Carlos family are moving to the United States in order to his parents to have a better job opportunity, but Carlos a very young adult wants to surf and hang out with his friends and does not want to leave his grandfather Rafael alone. So, he and his father had an argument and Carlos decided to very early the next morning look for his grandfather and friends and have a trip around the island. First of all they went to Loíza to visit the grave where lied Rafael's wife. Then went to participate on a surfing competition because Carlos wanted that his grandfather saw him surfing and share that kind of experience with him. Also, Pablo and Anselmo the grandfathers friends were having a great time outside the nursing home and felt free for the first time in many years. After that, they hang on a mini bar with some of the people who participated on the surfing competition and they danced and drink and seemed very joyful. The son of Don Rafael was very mad because his son take his car without permission and in a fight he got flat tires on his car. The plot has a lot to do with the father and how he wanted to be different from Don Rafael and also how he wanted his son to be different too. But at the same time that point of view is what makes the outcome of the end interesting and appealing. The movie has different genres, comedy, drama and a very distinctive "Boricua" style. It has a great cast and the actors and actresses make a great role on the movie. El nuevo día www.endi.com As an overall I consider this editorial (newspaper) a very good source of information. It has some topics that I consider shallow and manipulated by the editor like the assassinations and politics. Many times they exaggerate the news just to be a catch up for the audience. The majority of the news they cover are national or of the surroundings, I am making reference to USA and the Caribbean. I will like it to be more focused on international matters. It has been a while I did not have time to go to the movies and last friday I went by myself to watch this great movie. Is a puertorrican productions with a great cast that represents two perspectives how old but functional people live on the island and how they live and how young people think and try to build a life, making many mistakes but learning on the way. The landscapes are wonderful they present how blessed we are having that wonderful caribbean diversity in colors and in people. The way the actors speak and their body language makes the audience identify with them very easily. Also the sensibility appeals to all ages. It's an excellent production, a must see! :) Things I really don't like 1. Homophobia-SOCIAL 2. Horns during traffic- SOCIAL 3. Bad breath- PERSONAL 4. Child and animals abuse-PERSONAL 5. lack of hygiene odor- PERSONAL (TOTALLY HATE IT!) 6. People screaming- PERSONAL 7. Stinky feet- PERSONAL 8. Traffic in the metropolitan area- PERSONAL/SOCIAL 9. Reggaetton music- PERSONAL/SOCIAL 10. Politics (Politiqueros)- SOCIAL 11. Parents hitting their children abusively- SOCIAL 12. Irresponsible parents that treat their children like adults when they are like-SOCIAL 13. Bad coffe- PERSONAL 14. People judging me without even knowing what is really happening- PERSONAL 15. Trash on the side of the roads-SOCIAL 16. People throwing trash from their car window- SOCIAL 17. Indifference- PERSONAL 18. Lies- PERSONAL 19. Waking up veeerryyy earlyyyyy!!!! LIKE 7AM :P (I'M NOT A MORNING PERSON)- PERSONAL 20. Puertorricans getting crazy on the supermarkets when we have hurricane alerts- SOCIAL I determine the one's I marked as social because in one way or another it affects the social environment, mostly, our society. And the personal aspects, because they get me angry or mad. They are very personal experiences.
The social ones, are some of the things I can see or experience in my daily living. The three social aspects are: Homophobia, people throwing trash on the side of the road, parents hitting their children. 1.I choose Homophobia because people just judge people by their intimacy and believe that for just having a partner or sex with someone the same gender they are bad people. I actually believe this is so wrong and judgmental! 2. People throwing trash on the side of the road- because If we are supposed to maintain our surroundings and house clean why the throw trash on the roads. We have a beautiful island and landscape and that irresponsible citizens are making a great damage to our island and society. We are the ones who are supposed to take care of what is ours. 3. Parents hitting children abusively- I firmly believe that if a kid just misbehave sometimes they need a good spanking and that could make a difference in the future. But hitting them every time and with all their adult strength that is an abuse. Even more when they tell them bad and dirty words, that hurt them and humiliate the "Some people go to priests; others to poetry; I to my friends" English author, feminist, essayist, publisher and literary critic. The first time I read one of her works I just consider her ahead of his time in so many ways. She was one of the most influential writers and activist of the Feminist movement. She had a very tormented life, she developed mental illnesses developed by the death of her mother and being sexually abused by one of her half-brothers. Those experiences marked her so profound that she spent a lot of time in nursing homes. She had the bipolar disorder and when she got mad she could not have a functional life. Even though people can get mistaken with that kind of mental disorders I consider her a genius. I really enjoyed the character she invented as Shakespeare's sister, how she brought a different perspective on how a "sister" if it could have the opportunities he had she could be as brilliant or more and her works could transcend an become masterpieces. Also how she wrote about gender equality and rights. Using female authors as Jane Austin, Emily and Charlotte Bronte were some of the authors she was inspired in. http://www.online-literature.com/virginia_woolf/ http://www.virginiawoolfsociety.co.uk http://en.proverbia.net/citasautor.asp?autor=17844 lick here to edit. Ricardo Arjona is one of my favorite artists, this song is called "La mujer que no soñe jamás" is very special in so many ways. I have always felt very identified with the lyric because it describes how I am, how I actually feel most of the time. The first time I hear it it was kind of a shock because I told myself, that's me!!!! I love, love, love the song because it portraits that beauty is not just physically it's more than that . It is how that person makes you feel, that butterflies on your stomach and how happines can be experienced when you let go what society imposes as a beauty canon. "me gusta por que es autentica y vive sin recetas esas que tratan de vestir al amor de etiqueta e venido a parar con la mujer que no soñe jamas pero tambien jamas fui tan feliz" Cultura Profética is my favorite band since I was a teenager. I love reggae music it reminds me of my African heritage that I'm so proud about it. I have always told people that my skin color is white but I have always felt black on the inside, and I am very proud about that too! This song has a very special meaning, is from the latest album of the band, that is a romantic reggae album and I just love it all. It has a very different theme of what the reggae audience can expect of Cultura, but they have made a great job. The song is very romantic and it explains how when you are in love with somebody you want to be with that special person all the time and try to actually have quality time. My favorite verse of the song is "Prometo besar cada lunar que hace lugar en tu cuerpo perder la cuenta y comenzar de nuevo" Yes, I am a forever Romantic! :) I do like both artist but I hate this song!!!! I consider Natalie Jimenez a great artist, she has a great voice and it is very creative on her outfits and her style. And Ricky even thought he does not have a great voice I think he is a great dancer and performer. The first time I heard the song was on the Grammy's night and I just hated it. I felt I was on a safari on the movie Madagascar. I just can handle the rhythm!!!!! Also they play it a lot on the radio stations and every time I hear it I rolled my eyes and have to get out of the place. I don't think the lyric says much and it's and all around repetitive nonsense. Just hated it!!!!!!!
In Rotten tomatoes the reviews are very harsh and they make fun about the theme of the movie. Of all the reviews (275,985) that the webpage has received only a 47% really liked the movie. They all state that the movie was lazy and even though they had a very good cast the overacting and the vague relationship between the characters make it not so enjoyable. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/couples_retreat/ In the other hand on the yahoo movies site the reviews are very balanced almost half of the reviewers liked it and the other half just hated it. They all have in common in their reviews that they had a great cast but the directors Vince Vaughn and Petter Bilingsley did forced the topic. That the actors are good by themselves in their specific genre but not all together on this type of movie. http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/couples-retreat/user-reviews/ On IMDb it had a very poor review, many of the audience that went to the theater thought it was a waste of time and money. As on the other reviews I checked people thought it had a beautiful landscape and had a good topic to develop a couple who was having trouble on their marriage and wanted to go to therapy on a luxury resort and invited their friends. What did not happen was the exciting and turnpoints that makes this kinds of movies interesting. " What a wasted opportunity! They take 2 of our finest comedians, a beautiful cast of hard working actresses, and a great tropical setting and it comes out a stale, lifeless. laugh-free mess. Man, this was painful to watch". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1078940/reviews Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPKlEDf2Mb0 I really did not enjoy this movie, somebody give it to me last year as a present and I just hated it. I only watched once and it was enough. I do agree with the reviewers of the three websites I checked because it seems to be forced and overacted. They have a great scenario and they just act in a very crappy way and overshadow the beauty of it. I personally do not like Vince Vaughn's movies, I thinks he is s a terrible actor and his face does not indicate any type of emotion. I do think that some of the reviews I read were a little harsh on their critiques but I do agree it was a waste of money. Also I do not find any critique stating that in a point the movies get so slow you can just fast forward it and you will not miss any of the action. It's predictable and boring and just goes on and on on the judging of the things you should not do on a relationship and that's it! They don't propose anything of their "learning" on the therapy sessions or even state love as a possibility to try to make things work out. OK The movie is a about a plastic surgeon that is experimenting with skin implants, he is very successful but his personal life is a mess. His wife commits suicide and their daughter starts having social phobia and she started a psychological treatment. After the treatment finished, her father was invited to a wedding and his daughter goes as his date. On the party a young man invites the daughter outside and they start making up, but when they are going to have sex she freaks out and he hit her and she goes unconscious. She thought that her father raped her because when she opened her eyes he was the one there. After that, the girl also commits suicide, and the father wants to get revenge from the rapist. He kidnaps him and treat him as his prisoner for some weeks and one day he did him a surgery, the Doctor made him a sex change without even consulting. The movie portraits all the changes the young men now a "women" experiments. He was locked in a room and was always being recorded by the doctor, he could not have any contact with the outside world. He spent almost 6 years kidnapped, being a prisoner and having a new identity and a new gender. After some uncontrolled situations the doctor decides to release him and treat him/her as his female partner. He looked like a gorgeous woman but always acted as being harassed and uncomfortable. One day, he decides to escape the place he was held against his will for 6 years and comes back to the little village he lives in and try to explain to his mother that now that gorgeous woman was her son Vicente.
The movie brings a very complex topic but at the same time you can see the struggle between the two main characters and their will. Is a Spanish movie and the director is Almodóvar, and I consider him a genius. Her movies are always very complex and brings new perspective to the public in general. The actors are excellent and how it goes from all the procedures and treatments he has to have in order to be a full woman against his will is mind blowing. How the topic is presented makes it a great and interesting movie and also to get out of the ordinary. The story brings a little delicate theme of discussion but yet, how is written makes it a little less controversial. How many of us has had that type of experience? Well I have been there and it's harsh and awkward. From my personal experience I went to church when I was a teenager and at first it was a little bit confusing. I studied in Catholic private schools all my life and I went to masses because it was part of the school program not because I wanted to. And I respected the prayers of every one and how the mass was conducted by the priest but I always felt there was something wrong with me because I never felt anything special, not on the songs or when I received the Holy Communion. It was like if something missed on the connection between me and God or all the way around. I never told anybody how I felt, but deep inside I felt like a liar or even worst. So one of the things that make me wanting to go to my community Catholic church was that, trying to look another experience to see if I was capable of reaching that "thing"that people told me in school and my family that you felt when you had God in your life. So I started going to mass because I wanted to, in order to feel or encounter with God. I started participating in a youth group and I became a leader. I had great experiences with the other teenagers and young adults, I met great people and still today I consider them my friends but I always felt something missed. After I graduated from High School I continued visiting the church but I had so many questions and nobody seem to give me answers. After so many years of research and personal judgements I realize that you can have a great connection with God or any superior being just being who you are. I consider you don't need intermediaries or people telling you that if you do this or that you are a sinner. For me the most important thing is being aware that actions have consequences and if you do something you have to be responsible of what that may bring. Also being respectful with others, because even though you can have disagreements on any topic they deserve at least to be respected. Those kind of things that we do everyday for me are more important than going to mass half a day once a week. Constructing the connection, the personal connection with God and yourself every day and making your actions represent who you really are more important that in what you believe or what others think you may believe in. I feel my reaction to "Salvation" is influenced in many ways for what I have lived and experience, because I can identify myself with how he felt when he was the only one missing on the platform the preacher was at.When I was reading the description about the people screaming and sobbing around him and the preacher requesting him to get up and joining the was a little stressful because I wanted all that to finish but at the same time I felt a huge pressure, like if I was the one on that situation. Gosh! I wanted that to end like right away, I don't like people telling me what to do, I get really mad when that happens. I don't know if he made the right decision or not, because if it was me and I felt the pressure throughout the narration I really don't want to be in his shoes. I think he just did it to don't fail what people and his aunt expected from him, even he knew it was dishonest.
I consider himself a great narrator, because I could see what he was telling, or imagining it. Also that has a lot to be with the previous experiences I had, because I could identify that same feeling. In the way he is narrating, in chronological order you are like "seeing" her whole process and at the end him crying on his pillow because he lied to everyone, I could definitively "see" him. One of the statements that really made me think was "But I was really crying because I couldn't bear to tell her that I had lied, that I had deceived everybody in the church, that I hadn't seen Jesus, and that now I didn't believe there was a Jesus anymore, since he didn't come to help me." I think the details and words he used make me feel identified and also how he describes how the boy is crying with the intensity he is actually doing it. The final sentence kept me thinking a lot, we don't believe in things that don't accomplish our expectations? Or we just stop believing because I did not fit our needs? The differences between the two narrations are first of all, the gender of the narrator and the perspective it is presented. "Eleven" focuses more on the emotions and how she felt throughout the situation with the red sweater and Mrs. Price, "Salvation" is more focused on the events and how they happen and at the end it describes how he felt. Also what Hughes is narrating is a less daily event, it's a more delicate and radical event. He is very detailed on what was happening in the surrounding, the people crying and yelling, her aunt praying for his soul on her knees expecting to see a real change on his niece. In the other hand Cisneros alludes to a more young reader, teenagers or young adults who can identify with what she is writing about. |
